More Precious Than Diamonds

More Precious than Diamonds

But store up your treasures in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy, and thieves do not steel. Matthew 6:20

We are all familiar with the line "like a diamond in the sky" from Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. The author of this poem was closer to the target than he knew. Astronomers have just located a planet four thousand light years away that is composed entirely of diamonds. Most of us own no more than a carat or two of diamonds. Could you imagine owning an entire planet?

Many in this world spend a great deal of time and effort seeking the treasures of this life. Whether in the forms of diamonds, or other possessions, we all too often find ourselves in a race "to get ours" before it is too late.

Lately I have tried to ask myself, "What is the hurry?" “Why strive for possessions when I am already wealthy?” As the saying goes, “the best things in life are free." God's grace is free. The salvation of Christ is free for the asking. We are heirs to the creator of the universe. We own the diamond planet. I am sure the star of Bethlehem appeared as a "diamond in the sky." Maybe this was God's way that the gift of His Son is much more precious than diamonds.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the most precious gift of all – your Son. As we enter the Advent season, help to remind us daily that nothing on this earth or in this universe is more precious than He. In Jesus' name. Amen.
